We can’t wait to see how she surprises us next.
What do you get when you combine model and all-around babe April Iman with talented photographer Gabriel Perez? Raw, stripped-down shots of April that are intimately gritty, just in time to help you properly commence the weekend.
Photographer: Gabriel Perez – @itsknowone
Can you introduce yourself and tell us how you got into photography?
My name is Gabriel Perez, and I go by the moniker ItsKnowOne. I’ve been taking photographs ever since I was young but only up until the last 2-3 years have I been shooting more seriously. I work in LA mainly as a Freelance Motion Artist. Mostly in film, television, music videos and so on. Often when designing boards or creating an animation I use stock photography or have to create content from scratch. A big reason for me getting more into photography now has been being able to create my own content for use in my designs and artwork.
Where did you draw inspiration for this set and what vibe were you going for?
I have a huge collection of inspiration that I’ve collected over the years on various sites like Pinterest and Tumblr but honestly I keep my shoots fairly open and loose. My shoots are more about collaborating with the model I’m working with and I enjoy experimenting in the moment. For this specific shoot with April, the whole thing happened really organically. I asked her to shoot via Instagram, she said yes, she suggested a location, I sent her some various inspiration and we went from there. After I upload the pictures to my computer, I start experimenting with different moods and looks and go with what works best with the images.
Where did the shoot take place? What made this location the perfect place to set up shop?
So I was actually travelling to Japan for my birthday last year and contacted a variety of models beforehand. April responded with a cool hookah spot in Roppongi where we could use their private room for the shoot. I definitely lucked out. I was originally just planning to shoot at my Airbnb but the hookah lounge was much more interesting. I mean how often do you get to shoot in a hookah lounge with a hot tub, right? Ha.
What did you like the most about working with April?
April is awesome and extremely easy to work with. She has a lot of experience and after talking about the inspiration for the shoot she knew exactly what to do. Whenever you work with an experienced model who really wants to do their best and is open and excited to “work”, the whole shoot turns out better. I hope to shoot with her again soon.
What do you consider is the sexiest part of the female body?
Hardest question to answer in my opinion. Honestly it just depends on the person. I think a woman’s personality/style/voice can bring out different features that I may think are sexy. Because of photography, what I find to be “sexy” has become much more broad.
What inspires you to keep shooting?
I think life in general inspires me to keep shooting. The camera has opened me up to a lot of new things. Personal relationships, events and experiences, different ways of thinking and communicating. Plus it’s a great way to document and share moments in my life that I have either created or stumbled into.
What would you like to be remembered for?
Hopefully my dedication and drive for art and creation. A goal for me always is to make work that inspires and influences.
Before we let you go, any final words you’d like to say to your fans and followers? Anyone in particular you’d like to send a shout out to?
Ummm… Love and thank you to my family and my partner, Lillian. Everything I have done and do I owe to them. Definitely thank you to all the people who support me and my work, you all inspire me to keep creating even when I feel it’s insignificant. Also, a huge love and respect to the models I have worked with and even the ones I have yet to work with. They deserve respect at all times and should not be treated like property. And of course, thanks to Foxy!
